When Wales Literature Exchange needed to modernize their aging website—streamlining bilingual content, directories, and grant applications—they turned to us for a seamless transformation. This case study explores how we restructured their digital presence, automated complex content migrations, and delivered a fast, flexible site that empowers their team. Wales Literature Exchange needed to replace an aging website that was starting to creak and groan with age. They wanted a faster, more mobile-friendly site that was easy to manage. WLE connects authors, translators and publishers to help Welsh authors publish their works worldwide, and help worldwide authors publish their books in Welsh.
Our discovery process identified a number of key features were needed: bilingual content (in English & Welsh), book catalogues, directories for authors, publishers, and translators, and a variety of media including blogs, news and videos. All of which required extensive interlinking to connect the content and make it efficient to manage.
We also needed an easy-to-understand guide and process for publishers to apply for Wales Literature Exchange's Translation Grant Funds to help fund Welsh and English book translations.
We worked with our associate designer Jo Hollowood to refresh the website design and coordinated with the WLE team to restructure the website and simplify the content where possible.
Our lead developer then created a custom import script to migrate thousands of pages of directory content from the old website to the new one. This dramatically reduced the amount of manual data entry work necessary for our dev team and the WLE editors.
The new website is more focused on mobile, fully bilingual with a flexible page builder that gives the WLE team more flexibility with building pages. The page speed improvements have been dramatic, and switching to a modern CMS means they can keep on top of software updates more easily allowing them to spread their maintenance budgets further each year.
